New York-based IT consulting firm Fusion Collective launched Sentinel Citation, a platform built for federal court filings that verifies both the existence and argumentative relevance of every case lawyers cite, as AI-generated false citations draw growing judicial scrutiny.
The launch matters because courts are no longer treating citation errors as minor oversights. With over 1,400 documented AI hallucination matters on public record and six-figure sanctions already issued in 2026, attorneys now face compliance obligations around AI tool usage, not just professional responsibility concerns.
The Core Problem
Most existing citation tools only confirm whether a case exists. They do not check whether the cited case actually supports the argument it is attached to. That gap has left lawyers exposed.
"Lawyers are sanctioned for citations they never checked, and many tools only confirm a case exists, not that it supports the brief's claims," said Yvette Schmitter, co-founder and CEO of Fusion Collective. Stanford research supports this concern, finding that general-purpose AI models hallucinate on most legal queries.
How It Works
Sentinel Citation uses a patent-pending system that deploys three AI models from rival vendors, Anthropic, Google, and OpenAI, to independently evaluate each citation. Each model answers four questions: Does the authority exist? Is it quoted accurately? Does it support the cited argument? How strong is it?
A fourth model then acts as a meta-judge, consolidating the three verdicts into a single finding per citation. Every citation is also cross-checked against open legal sources, including CourtListener, the Cornell Legal Information Institute, and the Electronic Code of Federal Regulations.
Sanctions Are Rising
The 2026 enforcement environment has sharpened the stakes. Courts across federal circuits have issued suspensions, fee-shifting orders, and six-figure sanctions tied to AI-fabricated citations this year alone. A publicly available database now tracks over 1,400 such matters.
As courts begin requiring attorneys to certify their AI tool usage, verifying citations has shifted from best practice to a formal compliance requirement. Sentinel Citation is designed to work on an opposing counsel's brief as readily as on a lawyer's own, allowing attorneys to catch fabrications or misrepresented holdings before a filing reaches a judge.
Dual-Direction Use
"You can't trust one model to grade another's," Schmitter added. "Sentinel Citation puts a jury of rival vendors' models on every citation and checks each against the source, so attorneys can sign with confidence and scrutinize opposing counsel."
The tool is now publicly available at citation.fusioncollective.net.
